Defense Department Tests Cutting-Edge Techniques

Joint Technology Readiness Experimentation tests resilient communications.

The Department of Defense collaborated with the Indiana National Guard to conduct the first joint Technology Readiness Experimentation, called TREX23-1, event at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. The experiment, led by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, focused on deploying and assessing six technologies in a simulated disaster scenario to establish resilient communications for the safe evacuation of non-combatants.

“TREX is a new and enduring campaign of experimentation developed to support the Rapid Defense Experimentation Reserve (RDER) initiative,” said Thomas Browning, deputy chief technology officer for mission capabilities in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering.

TREX23-1 provided useful evidence for future development and integration of technologies that include signal devices, cyber protection, counterintelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. This event brought hundreds of attendees together, including representatives from the U.K. and Australia.
